'Es Pas Vermell' Care Home

‘Es Pas Vermell’ is a route near Andratx, where the Balearic Islands government tendered a competition to design a care home for the elderly. Es Pas Vermell refers to a passage among the Tramuntana Mountains landscape, known for its vermillion hue due to the iron-rich soil. Our entry adopted the colour for the care home’s inner courtyards, establishing a subtle dialogue with the surrounding landscape.

Promoting autonomy among the residents, the building establishes a perimeter of residential units and common areas around two courtyards. In turn, these common areas connect the central patios with, on the one hand, the street, and on the other hand, a rear garden. The two reddish courtyards, the heart of the care home, provide privacy, tranquility, ventilation as well as connection among the residential units around them. The ground floor houses up to 20 residents and the first floor, up to 40.

The project is defined by a clear and low-slung geometry, with the simplicity and monumentality of the Tramuntana Mountains as backdrop. The living rooms are oriented towards these, spatially and visually connecting the courtyards with nature.

Its friendly layout, the familiarity of materials and the integration of natural elements contribute to a care home that promotes well-being and a sense of belonging. The use of local sandstone marès for the façade and the building’s vertical openings engage in quiet conversation with its surrounding landscape and traditional Mallorcan architecture.
